Colombia's President Says 'I Will Take Up Arms Again' should American Forces Launches an Attack.

The US President and his Colombian counterpart have intensified the tone in their verbal conflict, further raising tensions bilaterally following American military units targeted Venezuela to remove President Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He has drug factories and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump added.

Rising Threats and Allegations

Speaking to the press on Sunday, Trump threatened similar armed intervention towards the South American nation, asserting the country is “very sick too” and led by a sick man who enjoys creating cocaine and distributing it to America."

While Colombia remains the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way connected to the business.

A Deteriorating Alliance

The country has long been a staunch collaborator of the United States in the fight combating drug cartels and benefited from wide political approval from American politicians, however, the relationship have deteriorated dramatically following Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s drug trade is mainly overseen by criminal organizations like one major cartel, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members demobilised after a landmark accord.

The President's Defiant Answer

Upon being questioned whether military intervention comparable to Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump replied: "It sounds good from my perspective."

President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised decades ago, rejected Trump's claims. "I am neither illegitimate nor am I a drug trafficker," he stated.

"He comments without knowledge. Cease defaming me," he posted in a message.

"If US bombs target rural communities, they will turn into thousands of guerrillas across the countryside. And should they arrest me, which a significant portion of the population holds in high esteem, they will release the powerful force of the populace," Petro warned.

From Guerrilla to Leader

The president dedicated some years as a young man belonging of the leftist M-19 guerrilla group though it is believed that he never engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he participated in creating a new constitution in 1991 and eventually served as a prominent senator. He served as mayor of Bogotá prior to his election the presidency.

"I pledged not to touch a weapon again ... but in defense of my country I shall resume the fight," he said.

Heightened Measures along with Broad Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the president’s security detail had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have expressed support with Trump, but voices from across the ideological divide have denounced the notion of an invasion on Colombia.

Political and Financial Strains

The US revoked his travel authorization subsequent to he encouraged US troops to refuse unlawful commands. Later, in October, authorities imposed economic restrictions against the president, his wife and several key allies.

Simultaneously the US was building up its troop levels in the Caribbean and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, the US executed attacks on maritime targets in Pacific waters near Colombia.
