This Satirical Thriller
Coralie Fargeat's daring commentary examines the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics along with the dreaded aspects of advancing years. Forced aside by her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a mysterious and horrifying treatment known as the Substance. This produces a youthful duplicate portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in an increasingly vampiric relationship among both women. Friday 17 October, Paramount+

Presence
Steven Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries through this innovative ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of the spirit. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their recent residence, the lens – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of conscious of the ghostly being, and it seems protective of her. But why? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation you might not see coming. This Creepy Thriller
Derrickson's contained scarefest holds up well without requiring a sequel. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has left the youth on edge. When Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and held captive in a basement, he fears the worst. However, the old telephone in the room continues to ring, with ghostly voices offering help, as the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the struggle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for materialism in this director's delightfully tacky film adaptation regarding the shamed televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who proclaims initially, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple begin monetising the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of bad interior design, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, yet Chastain succeeds to depict the real-life figure in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, on Film4
This Espionage Thriller
This week's another release by the same director is a intelligence thriller as sharp similar to the collars worn by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to identify a traitor within their ranks from a group of five – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are experts of understated style, leading to a delightful mind game of deception or honesty develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the intelligent intelligence fun. This Friday, various showings, Sky Cinema
